College Football's headset rule is showing an unexpected result early on
This College Football season comes with a ton of new rules from the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff to the brand new Two-Minute Warning or as it was called all Saturday the Two-Minute Timeout. One of the rules that brought a ton of excitement was allowing the coaches to have in-game communication with a player on each side of the football like in the NFL.
This is a massive addition to College Football and it'll likely help in a few ways this season. For starters, we'll probably see turnovers take a drop as coaches can go over reads on each play and we'll see less confusion. This will help the defense as well as coordinators can call in adjustments as the offense audible and change formations.
An unexpected consequence of this addition is the fact that these games may get extremely slow in between plays. In 2023, College Football teams averaged over 12 possessions per game and just above 24 possessions in each game total while in 2022 the number was above 13 possessions per game.
It's a small sample size but, the opening set of games showed us that we may see fewer possessions and maybe less scoring in 2024. In the opening game of the season, Florida State had just seven possessions while Georgia Tech also had seven. In the game between SMU and Nevada, each team had 12 possessions on pace with 2023 but it was an incredibly sloppy game. The game between Montana State and New Mexico State saw each team have 11 possessions but, there were also four possessions that lapsed less than one minute.
The sample size is small but, this is certainly something to keep an eye on as team's continue to adapt to the system.
How this rule change could help LSU Football
The use of on-field communication could be a big advantage for the LSU Football team early on in the season. As Garrett Nussmeier continues to grasp the offense, having the coaches in his ear can help with easing him into the offense. The defense also often struggled as they'd head right back onto the field because the offense scored so quick, now if the game is slown down the defense will have more time to rest. LSU has two new coordinators and as the players continue to adjust to the systems, having the coaches in their ear will be massive.
