Towards the end of the 2023 season for the LSU Football team Sage Ryan emerged as one of if not the best cornerback on the roster for LSU. That's why it came as a surprise when Ryan practiced at safety for most of spring practice. Throughout his career, Ryan has started games at cornerback, nickel, and safety filling whichever need the defense had.

It came as a surprise when LSU Football opened its summer camp, and Ryan was back at the cornerback position, starting opposite Ashton Stamps. Brian Kelly was asked about the decision saying the following:

"We feel like he’ll become that one player that can play both positions for us."

Kelly went on to further mention how the majority of the Spring was spent on developing Ryan's game at cornerback while he'll spend time at camp playing both positions.

While most LSU Football fans will prefer that Ryan plays full-time at safety the cross-training is a good thing for the team. During his time at cornerback last season Ryan didn't give up the big plays that killed the secondary for most of the season. The Tigers also have a young secondary filled with turnover and making sure the veteran is ready to play both is important.

The biggest positive for LSU, if Sage Ryan bumps down to cornerback, is the playing time it opens up on the backend. The move already allowed Redshirt Sophomore Jordan Allen the chance to play with the starting group. The move also has allowed DaShawn McBryde the opportunity to earn starting reps where he has impressed as everyone is excited to see him hit the field. The Tigers are deeper at safety so the move will be an overall positive for LSU.
