The LSU Tigers are on a bye week this week which allows us to look back on the first part of the season while also looking forward to the rest of the season. When LSU was tasked with replacing a Heisman Winner in Jayden Daniels at Quarterback, everyone predicted the offense would suffer a drop off in production.
Instead, Garrett Nussmeier has one of the bright spots this season and a massive reason for why the LSU Football team is 4-1.
Through five games, Nussmeier leads the country with 139 completions, ranks third in touchdown passes with 15, ranks fourth in the country in passing yards with 1,656, and ranks fifth in total touchdowns with 17. Nussmeier has done this all playing just one FCS school while most teams have played a few giving them a ton of inflated stats.
Given how well Nussmeier has played and how LSU will be in contention for the College Football Playoff for most of the year, Garrett Nussmeier has started to show up in the Heisman conversations.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that Garrett Nussmeier is showing up in Heisman conversations as he's been surgical this year.

Given how LSU will have to play the rest of the season, we're only going to continue to see Nussmeier in the conversation. The LSU defense will likely struggle at times in SEC play and if LSU is going to compete and win these games, it'll be by fielding an explosive offense. Most of LSU's weapons are maturing in their roles and as they continue to gain experience, this offense will only get more explosive.
A crazy turn of trends at LSU
For years, the biggest issue at LSU was that the Tigers always were seemingly a quarterback away from being the best team in the Country. In 2019, things started to flip as LSU won the National Championship with a Heisman winner at quarterback in Joe Burrow. In 2023, Jayden Daniels kept LSU in games they had no business being in with such an awful defense and won a Heisman for it. Now, LSU has a first year starter performing incredibly in Garrett Nussmeier and the Nation's top recruit committed at quarterback.
