Harold Perkins is preparing to play a new position for LSU on Saturday
While there has been a ton of change in both the players and personnel on the theme yet, one theme has remained the same. Matt House and Blake Baker haven't deployed Harold Perkins Jr in the best position to succeed. At linebacker, Perkins has been neutralized by opposing offenses as he's getting caught up in all of the bodies on the inside which takes away his speed.
Ever since Perkins was moved to middle linebacker the fanbase has wanted to see Perkins moved closer to the line of scrimmage where he could make plays. Well, the fanbase should get their wish this weekend.
At Wednesday's practice, Brian Kelly iterated that Whit Weeks has clearly been LSU's top performer and that it would lead to changes. Heading into the weekend, it's being reported that changes are coming as Whit Weeks will start at linebacker while Harold Perkins will play some snaps at star replacing Major Burns.
Now this likely isn't a direct one-for-one swap as LSU is likely making the switch due to their opponent. The South Carolina Gamecocks run the football just over 70% of the time meaning LSU will see plenty of heavy personnel. To best slow the Gamecocks rushing attack it makes more sense to add Weeks into the defense bumping Perkins outside rather than keeping the extra defensive back in the game.
If Harold Perkins has to step up and play a receiver in coverage, he proved he could against Missouri and Luther Burden in the Missouri game while he graded out as a solid player in coverage.
The Star is the perfect position for Harold Perkins
While Harold Perkins is undersized for a typical edge rusher role his speed and ability make him perfect to play star. Getting Perkins on the outside where he played as a freshman will allow Blake Baker to get creative in which blitzes he sends off the edge. Moving Perkins outside also allows LSU to get Whit Weeks onto the field more often which will make the defense much faster and more versatile.
