If LSU missed the Conference Championship for this reason mayhem would ensue
The SEC will look drastically different in 2024 as Conference Reallignment continues to change the College Football landscape. Into the SEC comes Texas and Oklahoma while the traditional divisions depart. Each SEC team now has three "Permanent Opponents" they'll play each year while the rest of the Conference Schedule will rotate.
As Divisions no longer exist qualifying for the Conference Championship also changes given the two division winners will no longer face off in Atlanta. The SEC had to announce new rules in the case of a tie which are as follows:
If you look at the rules, nearly all of it makes a ton of sense, head to head is the first tie breaker followed by record versus common conference opponents. It'll then go to record versus the highest placed conference opponent and conference winning percentage of all the Conference opponents among the tied teams. If the tie still isn't broken it then goes to the relative total scoring margin versus all Conference Opponents among the teams that are tied. It's hard to imagine that it'll ever reach the fifth tiebreaker or that the fifth tiebreaker won't produce a winner.
Then you look at the final bulleit point which states that if things are still tied, the tie will be broken via a random draw of the tied teams. On one hand, this would produce must watch TV as a name is drawn from a hat or a coin is flipped or a lottery ball is drawn. On the other hand, if LSU missed out on the conference championship and possibly a chance to play for a National Title this way chaos would ensue as it would with any program in America.
There are a few ideas that could've been better tiebreakers in case things ever reached such a point. The SEC could've then used Non-Conference schedules which would in-turn ensure that team's don't schedule horrible non-conference games leading to better matchups each season.
The best fan suggestions for a potential last tiebreaker
On Twitter or X whichever you may call it fans pitched their own ideas for what a better tiebreaker may be. Fans pitched barbecuing the tied teams mascots and seeing which tastes the best which would prove problematic if Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, or Texas A&M ever were in this scenario. Others suggested a wrestling match between the tied coaches which would be electric to watch. The best idea may have been either a tug of war match between the coaching staffs or an eating competition between the offensive lines.
