It’s been a hectic first week of the offseason for Jay Johnson and LSU Baseball. Johnson is currently juggling the transfer portal, MLB Draft decisions, recruiting, and coaching changes. The off-season got a little trickier as former LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri returned to College Baseball to coach South Carolina taking LSU's Director of Recruiting Terry Rooney along with him.

Thus far in the transfer portal, LSU Baseball lost eight players while bringing in former USF closer Chandler Dorsey.

The Tigers have now landed their second transfer in Indiana State's Luis Hernandez. Hernandez has played mostly catcher while also spending some time at first base and occasionally in the outfield. This season Hernandez was incredible batting .359 with 23 home runs and 76 RBIs for the Sycamores.

The biggest concern with Luis Hernandez for LSU is if he'll make it to campus as he's draft-eligible. This was a massive get for Jay Johnson and his staff landing the 35th-ranked player in the transfer portal according to 64Analytics. LSU will have to replace a ton of power as Tommy White and Jared Jones will likely both depart for the MLB Draft. Hernandez can now slot in at catcher replacing Alex Milazzo or first base replacing Jared Jones.

Massive need for Quality Arms

In all likelihood, LSU Baseball will probably lose Luke Holman, Gage Jump, and Griffin Herring to the MLB Draft. The Tigers also lost Cam Johnson, Aiden Moffett, Nic Bronzini, and Micah Bucknam to the transfer portal. The Tigers will need to pursue both high end starting pitching and high leverage relief pitchers to fill the holes of the departures if LSU is going to make a deep run in 2025.
