Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss prove that cupcake scheduling isn't the smartest idea
When LSU lost its season opener against the USC Trojans, the sentiment from the Tiger Faithful was all the same. The fanbase begged and pleaded that LSU should open its season like teams like Ole Miss who opened their season against a very bad Furman team.
While LSU has been in battles with USC, South Carolina, and UCLA the Rebels faced a much easier schedule beating up on Furman, Georgia Southern, Wake Forest, and Middle Tennessee. Well, Lane Kiffin had concerns about his teams schedule during the week and whether it was the best idea.
"I'm a realist. I don't think our opponents have prepared us for SEC play. My hope is that our practice and our fall camp has prepared us"
- Lane Kiffin
Kiffin's concerns were right as his Rebels dropped a game to Kentucky at home thanks to a late missed field goal. The entire game the Rebels looked out of sync against an opponent that could hold their own.
LSU and the Ole Miss Rebels now each have one loss ahead of their matchup in two weeks but, the programs are in much different spots. Heading into the South Alabama game, LSU has seemingly found a rhythm and they just need to fine tune some things before they reach their best form. The Rebels on the other hand now have an SEC loss and will have to fix things in a hurry as South Carolina and LSU are their next two opponents.
It still may not be a great idea for LSU to start every season against a Top 25 opponent but, atleast the Tigers are getting tested before SEC play.
