LSU Baseball's Ninth Inning Magic Runs Out as They Fall Just Short of SEC Tournament Title
The LSU Baseball team entered Sunday's game against Tennessee looking extend it's lead of Conference Tournament championships as they hunted down their 13th tournament title. Pitching was going to be a major factor for both teams after battling to this point of the tournament with Nate Ackenhausen taking the ball for LSU.
After Nate Ackenhausen struck out the first three Volunteers he faced, LSU got an early 1-0 lead thanks to a 471-foot bomb from Jared Jones.
Ackenhausen finished the game with six strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched. Once Ackenhausen left the game, LSU faced trouble as Tennessee scored three runs before Ulloa could record an out on a Billy Amick three-run homer.
The game remained relatively quiet until the sixth inning when the Tigers loaded the bases however, Steven Milam got picked off to end the Tigers' threat. The Vols took the momentum and added another run to stretch their lead to 4-1.
Hayden Travinski doubled followed by a Steven Milam ground-rule double to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth. Mac Bingham reached on an error and made it to second to put the tying run 180 feet away. After Ashton Larson struck out, Alex Milazzo struck out as well ending the Tigers run at the SEC tournament title.
LSU Baseball had an incredible week but, will regret two moments
The LSU Tigers had an incredible week making it to the SEC Championship and coming a few plays away from winning the tournament. The Tigers jumped ten spots in the RPI rankings going from a bubble team to safely in the tournament. The first of two moments that will hurt the Tigers is pulling Nate Ackenhausen without letting him finish the inning as Tennessee scored three of its four runs before finishing off the third. The other moment came in the sixth as LSU loaded the bases but, Milam got picked off at first while Tennessee was struggling to throw strikes which bailed the Volunteers out. The Tigers will now await their opponent for Regionals after a successful SEC tournament.
