LSU Basketball getting a visit from transfer portal’s top available player
While the LSU Basketball team is at its scholarship limit already, Matt McMahon may not be finished with building out his roster for 2024-25. Despite being out of scholarships, McMahon added transfer big man Noah Boyed as a walk-on.
The Tigers May look to do the same with the transfer portals top player available player Coleman Hawkins from Illinois. Joe Tipton from On3 reports that Hawkins will visit LSU on June 17th.
The 6”10 forward scored 12.1 points per game with 6.1 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game for the Illini.
Landing Hawkins would be a massive move for Matt McMahon and would make the LSU Tigers one of the best teams in the SEC. McMahon added tons of talent this offseason at guard and on the wing but, the team had hardly addressed the holes at forward.
The strongest competition for LSU in competing for Hawkins appears to be Kansas State where Hawkins just visited while a return to Illinois is certainly still an option.
While LSU Basketball is out of scholarships landing Hawkins should be no issue. The Tigers can add Hawkins like they did with Noah Boyed as a walk-on while providing him with an NIL deal to cover the costs of school.
Matt McMahon exploiting NCAA loophole
The NCAA’s rule changes have essentially made roster limits in college sports irrelevant. It seems that Matt McMahon and his staff are one of the first programs to exploit this rule as they have with Noah Boyer. McMahon was out at a disadvantage due to the fallout of Will Wade’s tenure but, he’s using everything in his power to overcome a scholarship limit.
