LSU Football becoming known for a position outside of defensive backs
When you think of LSU and defensive players that end up heading to the NFL you often think of defensive backs. The LSU Football team has long been known as a program that sends a majority of it's defensive talent to the NFL at the defensive back position however, LSU may deserve more credit for a different position.
LSU Football has eight active linebackers in the NFL which is two more than any other school with Michigan the closest at six.
The LSU Football program will also likely see this number take a massive jump after the 2024 college season. Harold Perkins has become one of the best linebackers in all of college football and with another good season, he'll join the NFL as an early first-round pick. Middle Linebacker Greg Penn III will bring back veteran leadership after recording 89 tackles, 4 sacks, and two interceptions with another solid year making Penn a solid draft candidate.
The strong linebacker core will anchor the LSU defenses as the team looks to bounce back after a brutal year defensively. The team has holes in the defensive front as well as concerns in the secondary meaning the team will need incredible efforts from the linebacking core. If players like Harold Perkins and Whit Weeks can make game-changing plays, than this defense may be good enough to supplement what should be a solid offense.
LSU Football: Time to be called LBU?
At this rate in time it may be fair to start calling LSU Linebacker U as the team has put more linebackers into the NFL as of late than any other program. The caliber of linebackers LSU puts into the NFL isn't just role players but difference makers like Devin White, Deion Jones, and Kwon Alexander. The LSU coaching staff can continue to use its dominance at the NFL Draft to ensure that the program keeps bringing in elite talent in recruiting.
