LSU Football needs to land a defensive star soon in this recruiting class
As things currently stand heading into the final weekend of official visits the LSU Football team holds the Nation's second ranked recruiting class according to On3. Through three weekends of official visits, the LSU Football team is yet to land a commitment this summer but, the team has put itself in a great spot with several top recruits.
The issue with this recruiting class thus far is the lack of defensive talent compared to LSU's offensive haul. The class has just three defensive recruits Jaboree Antoine, Charles Ross, and Keylan Moses all of which are highly touted recruits.
Part of the reason LSU has such a loaded offensive recruiting class is because of the offensive star power they've landed. The Tigers got early commitments from the Nation's top recruit Bryce Underwood and the Nation's top running back Harlem Berry. Two superstars like Underwood and Berry attract talent to play alongside them which has bolstered this class.
What LSU lacks in this recruiting class is a defensive counterpart to Underwood and Berry that will attract other talent to jump on board.
The positive for LSU in this recruiting cycle is that they've put themselves in a great position to land some of these defensive stars. DJ Pickett came to Baton Rouge in the first weekend and LSU impressed pushing the team to the top of his list. The issue for LSU is that Pickett doesn't plan to commit until October which may be too late to attract top talent.
This past weekend, LSU made a strong impression on two-sport star Jonah Williams but, Oklahoma will be hard to beat. Top-100 Recruit Damien Shanklin will commit in August and LSU is seen as the heavy favorite to lure him away from in-state Notre Dame. Bo Davis has put LSU in a great spot to land a few top defensive tackles out of Texas but, we'll need to wait to see if he can finish the job.
The easiest way to build back the defense is recruiting
This past season, LSU's National Championship caliber offense was submarined by one of the worst defenses we've seen in a long time. Changing defensive coordinators will be massive for improving on defense but, top talent makes it easier to build a championship level defense. Historically, LSU has developed as much defensive talent into NFL talent as any other school which should make landing top recruits even easier especially for coaches with a proven record like Corey Raymond and Bo Davis.
