LSU Tigers weekend recap: Baseball and women's basketball teams pick up big wins
By John Fye
The weather is finally turning as spring looms. However, the outdoor chores played second fiddle to another weekend choked full of LSU Tigers sports. Unfortunately, last weekend was not a clean sweep for the purple and gold.
LSU men's basketball team no match for Mississippi State
We had very high hopes for Matt McMahon's team on Saturday night. The LSU men's basketball team took the floor with momentum after knocking off back-to-back ranked opponents. However, Mississippi State entered Baton Rouge on a bigger heater, having won four straight.
The Bulldogs were too much for the LSU men's basketball team and cruised to an 87-67 win.
Mississippi State guard Josh Hubbard dominated the game, scoring 32 points in 34 minutes. Forward Tolu Smith III added 19 points and nine rebounds coming off the Bulldogs' bench.
McMahon's team struggled offensively despite guard Trae Hannibal scoring a season-high 22 points. The guard led LSU in scoring, which isn't a good thing, considering McMahon relies on the former transfer from Murray State to move the ball and play defense. Indeed, Hannibal having to take as many shots as he did indicated LSU's offensive shortcomings.
Jordan Wright was next on the Tigers' scoring sheet with 14 points.
Jalen Cook remained absent due to a leg injury. Forward Tyrell Ward, the hero in last Thursday's win over Kentucky, exited the game early after taking a knee to the thigh. The losses were too much for McMahon's team. The Tigers' lack of size in the post also led to their downfall.
The LSU men's basketball team will look to get back on track tonight against Georgia at PMAC.
