LSU Tight End Connor Gilbreath and DB Ryan Robinson Jr enter the Transfer Portal
The LSU Tigers have seen their fourth transfer of the Spring Portal this time with tight end Connor Gilbreath. The Juco transfer appeared in 13 games in 2023, mostly as a short yardage blocking tight end where he played 56 snaps.
The move doesn't come as a shock as Gilbreath will likely look toward a school that offers him consistent playing time as Mason Taylor, Mac Markway, and Ka'Morreun Pimpton will receive the majority of the playing time at tight end.
The departures, however, puts LSU Football at the scholarship limit of 85 after entering the Spring Transfer window with 88 scholarship players. Now when Brian Kelly and the coaching staff add defensive line depth, they will need one player to depart for each player that they bring into the program.
The Tigers also lost walk-on defensive back Ryan Robinson Jr who also entered his name into the transfer portal. Robinson was a three-star recruit from New Orleans choosing to walk onto LSU rather than taking a scholarship elsewhere. He'd appear in four games mostly on Special teams with the Tigers recording three tackles.
LSU Football is keeping the key pieces in place
Early on in the Spring Transfer portal period, the LSU Tigers have kept everyone in place who is expected to play a role in 2024. Many expected that we'd see tons of movement in this transfer window which is concerning for a program like LSU with high-quality depth pieces. The Tigers will now look to add to a College Football Playoff caliber roster starting with the defensive line. The Tigers have already offered Kent State defensive tackle CJ West a scholarship and we'll likely see the team continue to offer scholarships as things begin to settle. As far as departures go, we'll likely see a few more depth pieces enter the portal but, nothing massive.
