Previewing LSU Football's Week Two Opponent the Nicholls Colonels
After facing the USC Trojans in Las Vegas in Week One, the LSU Football team now faces a much softer landing spot hosting the Nicholls State Colonels in the home opener. The Colonels like the LSU Tigers are looking for their first win after losing to Louisiana Tech in their season opener.
The Colonels struggled offensively in their 17-25 loss to open the season recording only 138 yards passing and 62 yards rushing. The Colonels defense kept them in the game intercepting three passes and recovering a pair of fumbles.
The Tigers defense will need to take advantage of Nicholls' quarterback Pat McQuaide's inaccuracy as he completed just 10 of 26 passes this past weekend. Nicholls does have a top receiver as Quincy Brown caught four of those passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Where LSU will need to be even more dominant is in shutting down the Colonels rushing attack. Against Louisiana Tech, the Colonels rushed the ball 37 times for just 62 yards averaging 1.7 yards per carry. LSU should be able to force this team into being one dimensional and from there dominate the game.
Defensively the Nicholls State Colonels actually played a pretty solid game and kept the team in it despite an awful showing offensively. The Colonels scored a touchdown thanks to a pick six by defensive lineman Rasheed Lovelace.
The Tigers better account for linebacker Eli Ennis as he was a tackling machine racking up ten tackles and an interception. Defensive linemen Zack Bernard and Joe Mason could cause issues on the interior if they're not blocked as they did against Louisiana Tech. The Colonels have a playmaker in the secondary in Malik Woodery who intercepted a pass and returned it 49 yards.
Don't take the Colonels lightly but, dominate
The LSU Tigers are 0-1 now, and while this game should be a rout, LSU can't afford to take any opponent lightly the rest of the way. The goal for the team should be to put this game out of hand quickly this way Brian Kelly can get his younger players onto the field where they can gain game experience. This should be the perfect chance for the Tigers to get healthy and to prepare for the rest of the season.
