The 1988 matchup between the LSU Tigers and the Auburn Tigers is one of the most iconic game sin SEC History. Defenses dominated the game with Auburn leading 6-0 with less than two minutes to go in the game. The Tigers needed a touchdown to take the lead and with 1:47 left in the game Tommy Hodson threw a touchdown strike to Eddie Fuller to give LSU the lead late.

The atmosphere inside of Tiger Stadium was pandemonium as LSU fans exploded so much so that a seismograph in the Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex picked up ground motion which led to the game being dubbed "The Earthquake Game"

The win gave LSU a massive upset as Auburn entered the game ranked 4th in the AP and Coaches Poll while LSU entered the game 2-2. The win likely kept Auburn from playing in the National Championship Game as it was their only loss in the regular season.

The Game will now get documentary coverage on the SEC Network at 7 PM Eastern and 6 PM Central time.

While there are massive rivalries in the SEC that are easily known for their moments by SEC fans, LSU vs Auburn doesn't get enough credit for the moments it's produced. There is the Earthquake Game of 1988, The Barn Burner in 1996, Auburn's Victory Cigars in 1999 which led to the Revenge Cigars in 2001, the drama that ended Les Miles' time in Baton Rouge in 2016, and LSU's comeback win in 2017.

A shame that SEC expansion killed the rivalry

These two schools have played 55 times playing every season since 1992 with LSU leading the All-Time series 30-24-1. The history between these schools is so deep and the matchups are always so intense that it's a shame that the expansion of the SEC won't allow these teams to face off on a yearly basis. Hopefully, the Tigers will face each other in 2025 as they won't play each other during the 2024 season.
