The LSU Football team comes out flat yet again but, is picking up momentum
The LSU Football team couldn't have started this game off any worse, giving up an opening drive touchdown followed by offensive struggles and a field goal that put the Gamecocks up 10-0 early in this game. Things went from bad to worse as South Carolina blocked a Peyton Todd punt setting up a short field situation where South Carolina scored to make it 17-0.
The Tigers fought their way right back into the game as Caden Durham broke off LSU's best run of the season breaking tackles and scoring from 26 yards out to get the Tigers onto the board. Sage Ryan would then land a strip sack on LaNorris Sellers which Harold Perkins recovered.
The Tigers couldn't execute and settled for a field goal giving the Gamecocks a little momentum which was turned up about ten notches as LaNorris Sellers gashed the defense on a 75-yard rushing touchdown where Sage Ryan certainly should have made a play. When the Tigers scored on the ensuing drive they were due to make another mistake and they did, botching the extra-point operation which sent LSU into the half down eight points instead of seven.
The good news for this team is that they've got an entire half of football ahead of them and they have the momentum. The offense has been clicking on all cylinders and Blake Baker can make the adjustments at the half to win this team the game. The Tigers open the half with the football and could tie this game up in a hurry.
The biggest thing to watch will be the health of LaNorris Sellers as the Gamecocks quarterback limped his way into the locker room at halftime. Sellers killed the Tigers with his legs in the first half but, if he's hobbled LSU's focus will turn to slowing Rocket Sanders and defending the pass.
Why does it take this team so long to wake up?
In all three games, its looked like the LSU Football team needs to be seriously pushed to the brink before they figure anything out. USC took an early lead, Nicholls State had a lead in the third quarter, and South Carolina was up 17-0 before the Tigers started to play this week. Regardless of the outcome, LSU will need to figure out why the team continues to fall flat to open these games before it becomes the reason LSU is eliminated from playoff contention.
