The LSU Football team is shaking up its secondary once again during the bye week
Through the first five games of the season, the LSU coaching staff has done a ton of tinkering with the starting lineup in the secondary. We've seen freshmen like DaShawn Spears and PJ Woodland work their way into starting roles in the secondary throughout the season.
The reason for the rotating cast of starters in the secondary has been because LSU hasn't gotten the level of performances that they were hoping for. Between transfers and returnees, LSU had a ton of experience in the back end yet, the veteran players haven't played as well as LSU would have hoped.
The latest move is likely going to result in us seeing a new starter for the first time this season. For most of the Spring and the Summer we saw Javien Toviano at cornerback often working opposite of Ashton Stamps. An off the field issue took Toviano away from the team for some time and since returning we haven't seen a ton of him on the field.
That should change as Brian Kelly has said that LSU is moving Toviano to star which should allow him to see the field more often. Major Burns has spent a majority of the season occupying the role with varying results.
Toviano got a ton of experience in 2023 and is simply put, too talented for LSU to keep out of the lineup. The move makes a ton of sense as he proved to be a solid tackler especially in the Florida game where he racked up ten tackles and recovered a fumble.
The move will also give LSU the flexibility to return Major Burns to a traditional role at safety.
A constant push for the best defense
As LSU continues to look to its defensive standard, we're going to see a ton of changes all over the defense. The Tigers have shown a ton of improvement this season yet, the team still isn't at the level that Brian Kelly and his staff would hope. Nailing these defensive groups this week is so important as LSU will take on an explosive offense in the Ole Miss Rebels after the bye week in a game that could make or break the season.
