The LSU Tigers have a perfectly timed bye week this weekend before hosting the Ole Miss Rebels in Tiger Stadium. Early season losses on both sides of this matchup has taken some of the shine off of this matchup as most people expected both teams to enter this matchup undefeated.

The early season losses, however, have added an even higher level of intrigue to this game as a loss for either team could put the nail in their College Football Playoff coffins. The game could be even more must win after this weekend as Ole Miss is traveling to take on South Carolina who demolished the Kentucky team Ole Miss just lost to.

Its hard to declare a game must win as we truly don't control what does or doesn't happen to a coach but, for Brian Kelly this feels like a must win game.

A loss for LSU would all but eliminate the Tigers from the College Football Playoff race barring complete disaster for the Nation's top teams. It would also give Brian Kelly his second loss on the year where he would have lost to another team on LSU's level.

When Brian Kelly was brought over from Notre Dame it was to compete for National Championships and to win SEC Championships. A loss would mean that LSU would be 0 for 3 on making the Playoffs under Brian Kelly's tenure.

In Ed Orgeron's third year, LSU finished inside the top ten of both the AP and Coaches Poll at 10-3. In Les Miles' third year he won the College Football National Championship with a 12-2 record.

That said, a win would vault LSU right into the thick of things in terms of competing for a SEC Title and for a College Football Playoff bid. The Tigers are currently ranked 13th in the AP Poll and a win would vault them atleast one spot as Ole Miss is ranked 12th.

That weekend, Texas and Oklahoma, Ohio State and Oregon, Penn State and USC, and a ton of other top teams will all play in games that could determine the College Football Playoff race. With a few teams of LSU guaranteed to fall, a win wouldn't just put them on the cusp of the race but, it would firmly cement LSU as a playoff contender.

This isn't exactly a team of the likes of Alabama, Georgia, or Tennessee that LSU is facing off against as Ole Miss has shown some cracks. When the Rebels are forced to grind out drives rather than scoring in a flash, this offense does struggle. Defensively, Ole Miss' transfers on the back end struggled in coverage and can be exploited.

Brian Kelly can't afford to lose this game

Given the stakes of this game, LSU will have a ton of recruits on hand to watch this game including some of LSU's biggest targets and some of the biggest commits. The fanbase was already outraged over dropping the season opener yet again this time to USC. If LSU drops this game, there is going to be a long off-season of discourse about whether or not Brian Kelly is the man for the job which is bad for all parties involved.
