The LSU Tigers entered the Transfer Portal period with one position as a target, defensive tackle as Brian Kelly wanted to add depth to the room while he was also disappointed with the group's play this spring. However, the LSU Football team has picked up some interest in other position groups as the team is officially below the 85 scholarship mark. The LSU Tigers may now look to add some talented players with a chance to play in 2024 as they saw a few surprising depth pieces leave.

Cornerback:

Coming off of a miserable season defensively LSU can use all the help they can get on defense. The LSU Tigers will certainly consider adding a cornerback as Zy Alexander returns from an ACL injury, JK Johnson returns from a broken leg, and third-starter Jyaire Brown hasn't played as much as you'd hope with a starting cornerback.

The LSU Tigers have expressed interest in cornerbacks reaching out to Colorado Transfer Cormani McClain. McClain was the top cornerback in the 2023 recruiting class and the 14th-ranked player overall. During his time at Colorado, McClain struggled to get onto the field in part due to a late arrival in Colorado last summer. The LSU football team has a connection with defensive backs coach Corey Raymond who nearly landed McClain while at Florida. If LSU lands McClain, they'll have a starting option right away while if Corey Raymond can build McClain back up the team will have a long-term contributor.

Running Back:

Entering the Spring, LSU felt solid about where its running back room was with four running backs including Trey Holly. However, the LSU Football team and Trey Holly got some less than promising news as his next date in court is July 3rd putting his return in serious jeopardy. If Holly isn't back this season LSU will enter the year with just three scholarship running backs: Josh Williams, Kaleb Jackson, and Caden Durham.

This has led to Brian Kelly and the LSU Football team exploring potential options at running back in the transfer portal. The Tigers have reached out to Toledo transfer Peny Boone as a potential high-caliber replacement while the team will certainly continue to explore options over the next week.

Punter:

The LSU Football team had high hopes with punter Peyton Todd however, it's been far from smooth sailing. Brian Kelly spoke to the media about Todd's struggles saying the following:

"He's long, got all the tools. He's a classic case of today. You've got 14 practices. You look great, and today the ball was wobbling. It was not what I was looking for, nor was it what he's looking for either. He's a great kid, but look this is about performance on Saturday's and he's got to do a better job."

Brian Kelly

If Brian Kelly and the coaching staff end up deciding to add competition at the position the name to watch is Bryce McFerson. McFerson committed to Notre Dame a week before Brian Kelly took the LSU job. McFerson averaged 45.1 yards per punt on 38 punts in 2023.

LSU Football: Upgrade what could be a Playoff Contender

The College Football landscape has changed with the 2024 season becoming the first season with the expanded playoff. The LSU football team should be exploring any potential upgrades defensively in order to contend for the College Football Playoff. The offense in 2023 was good enough to make the four-team playoff but, the defense was brutal. The LSU Football team can't afford another season where it seems impossible to stop the opposing team's offense.
