The Punter position remains a massive question for the LSU Football team

This off-season, the biggest needs that stood out for the LSU Football team were at defensive tackle, running back, and defensive back which was put on display with who LSU pursued in the transfer portal. This spring the LSU Football team brought in Louisiana Tech transfer Blake Ochsendorf at Punter signaling a summer camp battle.

This was long seen as Peyton Todd's job to lose however, his performance in the Spring drew ire from Brian Kelly who spoke on his inconsistency.

"He's long got all the tools. He's a classic case of today. You've got 14 practices. You look great, and today the ball was wobbling. It was not what I was looking for, nor was it what he was looking for, either. He's a great kid, but look, this is about performance on Saturdays and he's got to do a better job."

Landing Ochsendorf via the transfer portal seemed like a move to bring in a consistent option with college experience at the college level. In 2023, Ochsendorf punted the ball 53 times for an average of 45.7 yards per punt with a long of 70 yards.

Thus far, neither punter has been able to grab ahold of the starting job which is a concern as we're two weeks away from the opening game. Brian Kelly spoke on what he's seen thus far on Wednesday saying the following:

"They both have legs. We need to get consistency. If we have to play them both, we'll play both."

An interesting problem but, not the end of the world for LSU Football

While it's definitely a concern that LSU Football hasn't found a starting punter yet, it's a problem that shouldn't be too worrisome. The Tigers will face USC in week one and while it may be a close game, the offense shouldn't have to punt too often. The Tigers can then use the second game of the season against Nicholls State as the chance to rotate punters if needed while LSU may not need to punt either. The biggest positive of this whole situation is that we're talking about Punter being a problem rather than other positions.
