The rumors of a disconnect at LSU are a tired narrative on an easy target
While Brian Kelly hasn't been perfect as LSU's Football coach, there have been some clear improvements. There are some areas you can place blame on Brian Kelly, hiring Matt House hurt him as did letting Corey Raymond leave for Florida. You can blame Brian Kelly in part for LSU's season opener losing streak but, even that is a tough things to blame him for.
This past weekend, John Talty of CBS Sports reported a "deeper disconnect" within the LSU Football program in his article after the game. The following excerpt was mentioned near the end of the article with little to no follow up or further explanation.
"Multiple industry sources familiar with LSU told CBS Sports on Saturday they believe the on-field issues are a result of a disconnect between Kelly and his LSU players, with his personality and style not resonating as well in Baton Rouge as it did in South Bend. "
- John Talty
While it could be true that there is some sort of disconnect, it's just as likely that this is coming from a player or a few players who are upset with their situation at LSU. It's important to note that Talty is tied into the state of Alabama and covered the Tide for some time.
After this article came out, Matt Moscona of 104.5 ESPN was quick to dispel these rumors and later had Kyren Lacy on his show where Lacy spoke glowingly about what Brian Kelly has done for him.
The LSU Football team's locker room after Saturday's win also looked everything except for a group that isn't enjoying themselves.
Is it possible that Brian Kelly isn't totally connected with some of his 120 players he coaches? It's certainly possible and highly likely at any job across America, you'll find an employee or tow that doesn't really know their boss or doesn't like their boss.
Why isn't there reports about Kirby Smart having a disconnect with his players they've had more than 20 driving related arrests or citations since a player was killed in a driving related incident. If you go around the country and asked a player on every team if there was a disconnect between them and the head coach you'd find a player that says so at every player.
This report is a cheapshot at an easy target
At the end of the day, Brian Kelly needs to do a better job and he'd be the first person to admit it if you asked him. With that said, the highly paid coach who is a relative outsider as a 62 year old from the North coaching 18-23 year olds who are mostly from the South which makes him an easy target. If Brian Kelly was so disconnected from his players and his staff, you'd see mass departures in the transfer portal and he probably wouldn't have a top three recruiting class either.
