The Top 10 LSU Football Recruiting busts of the 2000's
5. Chris Davenport - Defensive Line
Another highly rated recruit for LSU, Chris Davenport was a five-star recruit in the 2009 recruiting class. Davenport finished his LSU career with just 1 assisted tackle while the staff moved him to the offensive line where he didn't have any success either.
4.Clifton Garrett - Linebacker
When LSU landed Clifton Garrett it was another massive piece in the 2014 pass as Garrett was a five-star recruit and the top linebacker in the class according to 24/7 Sports. Garrett played in just three games at LSU as a special teamer before he transferred and never really caught on anywhere.
3. Russell Shepard - Wide Receiver
As a recruit, Rivals ranked Shepard as the 7th ranked player in the class while ESPN ranked him as the third ranked recruit in the class. Nearly every school in the country came calling for Shepard but, LSU won out. In the most Les Miles way possible, Miles took the Nation's most sought after quarterback and moved him to wide receiver. The blame mostly lands on Les Milers but, with all the hype Shepard came in with, his outcome at LSU was underwhelming.
2. Xavier Carter - Wide Receiver
Talking about Xavier Carter on this list is weird as he did great things at LSU but, they weren't on the gridiron. The Tigers landed Carter as a five-star wide receiver ranked by both Rivals and 24/7 Sports. Carter only played two seasons for LSU catching nine passes for 204 yards and four touchdowns adding 27 yards rushing. The production doesn't match what you want from a five-star receiver but, Carter was a Ten-Time All-American, Seven Time National Champion, and swept the runner of the year awards in 2006 on the track. Where it does hurt is the fact that Xavier Carter was ranked higher than a ton of receivers including Calvin Johnson.
1. Arik Gilbert - Tight End
On Commitment Day, Gilbert was seemingly between Alabama, Georgia, or Clemson but, shocked everyone by picking LSU. The decision was so shocking that LSU reportedly stopped practice because the staff didn't believe the news. Gilbert was touted as one of the best tight-end recruits ever as a unanimous five-star and the unanimous top tight end recruit. At LSU, Gilbert was productive as a freshman catching 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns but, he'd transfer to Georgia. Gilbert has since made stops at Georgia and Nebraska but, is currently out of college football.
