What the NFL Draft told us about the state of each SEC Program
Tennessee
Josh Heupel runs one of the Nation's most explosive offenses which should lead to tons of selections in the NFL Draft. The Vols however had just three selections in this year's draft two of which were on the offensive side of the football.
The Volunteers return plenty of talent in 2024 to surround former top recruit Nico Iamaleava. Tennessee had a down year talent-wise with up-and-down success but, there's no reason to be alarmed yet.
Texas
The Texas Longhorns capped off another great season finishing with the second most draft selections with 11 players picked. While Steve Sarkisian is known as an offensive guru, the team had an impressive draft with four defensive players selected including a first-round pick.
The Longhorns will make their long-awaited SEC debut in 2024 joining alongside the Oklahoma Sooners. While many coaches have tried and failed Steve Sarkisian has truly revived the Texas Longhorns program. If the Draft has shown anything it's that Steve Sarkisian will continue to recruit top talent and then send them into the NFL winning games along the way.
Texas A&M
Jimbo Fisher put the College Football world on notice with a historic 2022 signing class landing eight five star recruits. Despite Fisher signing 30 recruits in that class none of the players were selected in this draft after staying at Texas A&M. The Aggies did send four players into the NFL via the Draft with Edgerrin Cooper coming off the board in the second round while the other three went on Day Three.
The Aggies certainly have to be disappointed with the draft after such a historic signing class seemingly went to waste. On the positive side, Mike Elko's former program Duke sent three players into the NFL Draft including Graham Barton who went in the first round. You have to be optimistic if you're a Texas A&M fan you have to be optimistic that Elko will continue coaching up talent like he did at Duke.
Vanderbilt
The Vanderbilt Commodores were the only SEC team that didn't have a player picked in this NFL Draft. This marks back-to-back years that Vandy has missed out on sending a player into the NFL. Since taking the job, Clark Lea is just 9-27 and he's done some great things but, they'll eventually have to start turning this program around.
