Over the past few seasons LSU’s quarterback room has been clearly defined heading into the season. Jayden Daniels has been the clear elite starting quarterback while Garrett Nussmeier has been the experienced backup ready to step in at a moment’s notice.

The backup role has been very important in the past for LSU as Jayden Daniels rushing ability has led to him missing time in games. As Garrett Nussmeier, moves up to the starting role, the backup role becomes the camp quarterback battle everyone will talk about.

Last season, the man behind Nussmeier was Rickie Collins a dual threat quarterback that can beat any defense with his legs. Collins played sparingly completing both of his passing attempts for 3 yards while rushing three times for 19 yards.

Also in contention for the job is incoming transfer Junior AJ Swann from Vanderbilt. While Collins is inexperienced, Swann brings experience having passed for 2,731 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions, completing 222 of his 394 passing attempts.

Thus far neither quarterback has separated themselves which is a slight concern as the team enters the portion of the summer where they begin prepping for USC. Freshman Collin Hurley has been able to throw his name into the mix but, given the importance of the position the team would prefer an experienced player.

Which quarterback should win out this summer?

In terms of a backup quarterback, you want a player that can step up in the case of an injury and operate in the same offense as the starting quarterback. That answer is why I side with AJ Swann as the backup to Garrett Nussmeier over Rickie Collins. Now if Nussmeier were to miss time this season, the LSU Football team would be better off with Rickie Collins or Collin Hurley a dynamic playmaker at the position.
