The Tennessee Volunteers are the best example right now of not needing a high flying offense to be one of the best team's in the Country. The Vols rank 12th in the conference in scoring yet, they're unbeaten and rank 1st in the AP Poll. Transfer Chaz Lanier has been incredible for Tennessee scoring 18.9 PPG while they have four players averaging 10 or more points per game.
The Bulldogs are off to a 9-1 start to the season in part due to their defense allowing just 64.8 PPG. The offense has been exciting though led by true freshman Asa Newell who's scoring 16 PPG while shooting 57% from the field. If the Bulldogs can cut down on their turnovers, the offense may hit another level making this team dominant for SEC play.
Based on their schedule to start the year no one expected that the Sooners would jump out to a 10-0 start. The offense isn't leading the way as the Sooners defense allows just 65.9 points per game while Oklahoma is turning the ball over just 11.9 times per game. The Sooners will have one of the SEC's strongest 1-2 punches in Jalon Moore and Jeremiah Fears while anyone else in the rotation can get hot on any given night.
The Ole Miss Rebels are another team that's using defense to win games and it has them ranked 17th in the AP Poll. Sean Pedulla and Jaylen Murray have been red hot to start the year combining to score 27.6 points per game while both are making more than 44% of their three point attempts. Once Senior Matt Murrell returns from injury, this offense should only take another step in the right direction.
