The LSU offense needs to figure it out - and fast

While the defense has shined, the LSU offense has underwhelmed so far this season.

For the second straight game, the LSU offense has looked out of sync. The Tigers started slow last week against Clemson, but were able to figure things out in the second half en route to a massive Week 1 win. There's no shame in having some trouble against Clemson's vaunted defense, especially on the road, but the LSU offense continued to look out of whack on Saturday night in the home opener against Louisiana Tech.

LSU's slow offensive starts need to be corrected

Garrett Nussmeier missed several throws in the first half against the Bulldogs, which included a severely underthrown deep ball down the left sideline that was picked off by Louisiana Tech on the fourth play of the game. He still posted a decent completion percentage, but he is capable of being much better. His throws down the field weren't where they needed to be, which led to multiple missed opportunities for the Tiger offense early on.

After scoring just three points in the first half against Clemson, Tiger fans were hungry for a faster offensive start against a lesser opponent in Week 2. The Tigers missed that opportunity, as they scored just 10 points in the first half against the Bulldogs. Thankfully, the defense showed out again, and LSU ended up being alright. But slow offensive starts aren't going to fly in SEC play.

The Tigers open SEC play next week against the Florida Gators. After starting slow out of the gate in back-to-back games, the LSU offense needs to start fast against the Gators. Yes, Florida just lost to USF, but Billy Napier's team has had their backs agains the wall before. Last season, Napier suffered several early season losses before putting together an impressive second half of the season. LSU cannot afford to overlook Florida in any way, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Gators come out with an aggressive defensive game plan against Nussmeier and company.

Next week, it's imperative that LSU begins the game with a smoother and more effective offensive effort. Nussmeier was better in the second half, but Tiger fans would take plenty of comfort in seeing a faster start out of the gate next Saturday at Tiger Stadium.
