The LSU defense has been a cause of frustration for Tiger fans in recent seasons. Last season, LSU allowed 23.4 points per game, which was third-worst in the SEC. They also allowed 364.4 yards per game to their opponents, which ranked 11th in the conference.

Brian Kelly and his staff brought in a number of reinforcements to try to shore things up on the defensive side of the ball. Nine incoming transfers headline a talented group of defensive newcomers, but one true freshman cornerback has a chance to raise eyebrows this season in Baton Rouge.

Highly-coveted recruit DJ Pickett could be in line for an eye-popping season

Highly-coveted recruit DJ Pickett could be the next cornerback to make a significant impact for LSU as a true freshman. Following in the footsteps of Derek Stingley Jr. and Eli Ricks, Kelly and his staff have high hopes for Pickett.

Hailing from Zephyrhills, FL, Pickett was the top-rated player in LSU’s 2025 signing class. Along with his 6-foot-5, 195 pound frame, the five-star prospect brings a tremendous skill set to the Tigers. He runs a 10.7-second 100-meter dash, and after totaling 10 interceptions in high school, possesses great ball skills.

LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker has already been raving about Pickett's skill set, saying he's been "as good as advertised." In a much-needed bounce back year for the Tiger defense, Pickett's emergence as a top-tier talent has the potential to draw national attention.

One of LSU's starting outside cornerback spots is slated to be occupied by Virginia Tech transfer Mansoor Delane. Delane is a four-star corner who was ranked as the No. 4 corner and No. 52 overall player in the transfer portal according to On3's Industry Rankings. However, the other outside cornerback spot appears to still be up for grabs. Pickett could be a perfect fit for that role.

The 2024 season saw plenty of true freshmen shine across the country. Players such as Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State), Ryan Williams (Alabama), and Leonard Moore (Notre Dame), all received national recognition in their respective true freshmen seasons in 2024. Tiger fans are hopeful that Pickett is next in line.
