Tonight's game between LSU and Ole Miss is the first game with a new meaning
When the College Football Playoff was expanded from four teams to twelve teams, there was one serious argument against it. Everyone felt that being able to lose a game or two would devalue the regular season and would make these games meaningless. When LSU and Ole Miss kick off their game tonight, that opinion will be proven wrong.
When 4-1 LSU hosts 5-1 Ole Miss, one team has to lose this game and in turn, they'll suffer their second loss of the season. While this game isn't officially an elimination game, this game will likely eliminate the losing team from the race for the College Football Playoff.
In the past seasons, both teams would be hoping for a miracle to even be in consideration on Selection Sunday but, this season both teams are right in the mix for a bid to the College Football Playoff.
Given the chaos in the SEC and the chaos around the country, the losing team could find themselves back in the picture at the end of the year but, it would take a miracle. Given how much this game means for each teams season we're going to see the passion and the energy ticked up another notch.
Expect a ton of gutsy calls on both sides of this matchup
When Brian Kelly, Lane Kiffin, and their respective coordinators are making play calls, expect to see a ton of calls you may not see in an average game. Both of these teams can't afford a loss while a win would be the best on both teams' resumes. Lane Kiffin has always made gutsy calls and Brian Kelly isn't afraid to go for a random fourth down but, given Kelly had an extra week to prepare for this game it may reach another level today.
