After showing signs of improvement during the 2023-24 College Basketball season, the LSU Basketball Program appeared to be heading in the right direction under Matt McMahon post Will Wade. The 2024-25 season has been a nightmare for the LSU Basketball Program as LSU is 1-8 in SEC Play, and are currently in the midst of a five game losing streak.
As the LSU Basketball team continues its free fall, LSU Basketball fans are beginning to wonder if its time to move on. Under Matt McMahon, the Tigers are 43-45 with a 12-33 record in SEC play as the end of his third season approaches.
After Will Wade left, only one player returned for the 2022-2023 season and the Tigers won 2 games in SEC Play, now with the roster Matt McMahon has assembled, LSU may finish with 2 wins once again as the Tigers will only be expected to beat South Carolina.
Matt McMahon's contract at LSU started at $2.6 million and increases by $100k each year through the seven year deal. If McMahon is let go, he's entitled to half of what is left on his contract which makes for a hefty buyout. If Matt McMahon is bought out this year it'll cost $7.5 Million, $6.1 Million in the 2025-26 season, in 2026-27 it'll cost $4.65 million, and in 2027-28 it'll cost $3.15 million.
The factor to take into account is that if McMahon is let go and a new coach is brought in, that too will cost LSU a hefty salary. If the new Coach wants his own fully new staff the Tigers will need to buy out the old staff and pay a new staff.
The most likely scenario for Matt McMahon is that he gets at least one more season even if he loses the rest of the way. The administration acknowledged what a tough task it would be to rebuild the program post Will Wade and when Matt McMahon took the job he did it knowing sanctions may be coming which will finally come out of effect following the season.
