On Thursday Night, 32 College Football stars saw their dreams come true during the first round of the NFL Draft. For the LSU Football program, the night was all about Will Campbell as the LSU star was the first offensive lineman taken 4th overall to the Patriots. Between his play on the field and the fact that he'd become the first offensive tackle in program history to be taken in the first round, LSU fans were all pulling for Campbell.
It was trending toward Will Campbell landing in New England for months after it became clear that Cam Ward, Travis Hunter, and Abdul Carter were going to be the first three selections. While LSU fans know Will Campbell will be a star wherever he lands, Patriots fans were more skeptical mainly due to concerns over his arm length. It's been less than 24 hours, but Will Campbell has quickly become a fan favorite in New England with his Pre-Draft story and his comments after being drafted.
Will Campbell instantly becomes a fan favorite with Drake Maye quote
The New England Patriots drafted Will Campbell with one clear agenda, protect quarterback Drake Maye. As a Rookie, Drake Maye suffered a concussion and a hand injury which made it clear the team needed to bulk up on the offensive line. If it's up to will Campbell, the franchise quarterback won't have to worry about any more injuries.
"I'm gonna fight and die to protect him with everything I've got."Will Campbell
While Patriots fans will be thrilled to hear the tone, their new offensive tackle is setting, Will Campbell backs the play up on the field. During his three seasons as a starter at LSU, Campbell only allowed 4 sacks in the vaunted SEC, which includes playing as a True Freshman.
While many have hinted that Will Campbell should move to guard long term his play on the field will say otherwise. Despite having "shorter arms" Campbell was a dominant force in the SEC and an All-American Offensive Tackle who'll figure out what he needs to do to succeed at the next level and dominate.
