LSU Tigers Football: Monday News for 10/27

facebooktwitterreddit

It is now Monday, two days after the now #17 LSU Tigers upset the now #7 and previously-undefeated Ole Miss Rebels, 10-7, and the excitement still hasn’t worn off. Add this game to the lore of the LSU/Ole Miss series, where there have been many memorable games over the years. Who would have thought the game-winning touchdown in this year’s edition would be scored by LSU’s rarely-used and likely little-known (well, at least until now) tight end Logan Stokes?

Let’s recap the winning drive and the end of the game before delving into several news items for today…

The winning drive and end of game

In a game with some great highlights, the winning touchdown capped off a 13-play, 95-yard drive that took 6:06 off the clock. LSU ran the ball the first 12 plays of the drive, before the lone pass of the drive resulted in the game-winning score. Kenny Hilliard gained 47 of his 64 total rushing yards on this drive, on 6 carries. His fourth run of the drive was on a 1st-and-10 from the LSU 39. He gained 16 yards, which featured not only a nifty, acrobatic spin move to elude one Ole Miss defender, but then he threw another Ole Miss defender toward the sideline, and was finally brought down at the Ole Miss 45 (check out the highlights beginning at the 2:10 mark). Three plays plays later, on a 4th-and-1 from the Ole Miss 36, Hilliard gained the necessary yard to keep the drive alive.

Leonard Fournette took over from there, gaining 28 his 35 rushing yards on the drive (on four carries), setting up a 1st-and-goal from the Ole Miss 3-yard line. Two plays later, Anthony Jennings perfectly executed the play-action fake, hitting Stokes for a 3-yard touchdown with 5:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.

On its ensuing possession, Ole Miss was able to drive to the LSU 47, and on a 4th-and-1, Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace on a quick snap was stopped cold by the LSU defense for no gain. Kudos to the LSU defense for recognizing the quick snap, with Jermauria Rasco and Kendell Beckwith blowing up the play.

LSU was forced to punt after taking over at its own 47, giving Ole Miss one last chance at a win, or tie to send it into overtime. The Rebels drove to the Tigers 25 with 9-seconds left, and initially sent out the field goal unit for a 42-yard attempt. The Rebels were whistled for a delay of game, making it a 47-yard attempt. The Tigers called a timeout to freeze the kicker, and after the timeout, the Rebels sent the offensive unit back onto the field. Wallace threw a deep ball toward the end zone, and it was intercepted by the Tigers’ Ronald Martin to seal the win for LSU.

A crazy finish to be sure!
