LSU Football: Tigers Must Return the Title of DBU
By Alex Gomez
Truth be told, the Tigers got burnt last Saturday by the Bulldogs of LA Tech… but if they want to succeed in SEC play, that can’t happen again.
After a mediocre performance last Saturday by the LSU pass defense, it will be crucial that the title of DBU returns to Death Valley soon, like as soon as this Saturday. Coming in to Saturday, one of the most prolific offenses of the season belongs to Ole Miss. With the talented Jordan Ta’amu and his company of NFL caliber wide receivers, it will be imperative that the Tigers play lockdown defense.
After giving up 181 yards to Adrian Hardy, something will have to give with the nations top receiver in AJ Brown coming to town. In the game against LA Tech, you saw the DBs look lost at times and playing a lot of football with their heads down. It is important to locate the ball at all times and defensive back coach Corey Raymond knows that.
In the weeks opening press conference Coach Orgeron was asked how he felt about Greedy Williams being matched up with AJ Brown the entire game in which he responded, “If you put one guy on him, you have trouble with the other one.” (NOLA.com)
The Tigers struggles also fall on the Tiger pass rush, as for most of the game J’Mar Smith had a clean pocket to utilize. It will take a combination of a strong pass rush as well as a performance similar to last year’s coverage. When the Tigers played the Rebels in Oxford, no receiver hit over 50 yards and they held the high scoring Rebels to just 24 points.
If the Tigers can return back to DBU for a couple of games this season, the possibilities are endless in terms of a title run. The defense is crucial in this matchup against the Rebels, as the offense should have no problem gashing the Rebels.
