LSU football: Will this be the next epic chapter in the “Bayou Bowl” series?
By Alex Gomez
When thinking of some of the greatest games in college football history, you can’t forget about some epic LSU Football-Gator Football games. Will this game join a memorable list?
When two storied programs like LSU football and Gator football matchup against each other, crazy thing are bound to happen. Oh and have they ever. Anything from hurricanes to fake field goals to fourth down conversions have all made there way into an incredible series. Matching up in a crucial showdown on CBS, it looks like we are in for another good one. Here is a look back at some of the more memorable games:
2007: 5-for-5
In a game that started out shaky for the #1 ranked Tigers, the game turned out to be one for the ages. Facing off against Tim Tebow and the 9th ranked Gators, it was a game that drew eyes of every college football fan. After the Gators took a quick 10-0 lead, the Tigers finally woke up and began to play. With the chances looking bleak, the Tigers scored a late touchdown to get the game to 24-21, and gave the ball back to Tebow. The Tiger defense rallied and stopped the Gators to get the ball back with only a couple minute left on the clock. LSU went for it 5 times (FIVE TIMES!!) converting on every single one, including the game winning touchdown. Tigers went on to win 28-24 and won the BCS National Championship that year.
2010: Field Goal Fake Out
One of the most memorable play calls, maybe in college football history, was delivered that night in The Swamp. A matchup of 12 vs 14 once again made for must-watch TV, and ever did it live up to the hype. The game was never really dominated by either team the whole game, it was a very back-and-forth. With the lead belonging to the Gators late, all LSU had to do was kick a field goal and send it to overtime. Instead, with 6 seconds on the clock, Les ‘Mad Hatter’ Miles called for a fake field goal, which led to a Tiger victory.
2016: Home Away from Home
In a game that is likely to be forgotten by many LSU football fans, there is some importance in this game. The Tigers played an away game in 2016 in Death Valley for the first time in school history. After Hurricane Matthew caused for the game to get canceled, the teams ultimately got the game rescheduled. Due to scheduling conflicts, the game was ultimately held in Baton Rouge, causing the home games scheduling to be rearranged for future years. Without this happening, this years game would have been played in Tiger Stadium as opposed to The Swamp.
2018: ????
This year hopes to bring another epic game, one that will hopefully fall in favor of the Purple and Gold. Both teams matchup well and both look to earn respect in the SEC, and this game will be the first step in heading in the right direction. This game is the first of a few tough games in a row, and it is crucial that the Tigers can catapult off of this game for the future.
It will be interesting to see how this game plays out, but the game is shaping up to come right down to the wire… we are looking at you Cole Tracey.
