LSU Football: Justin Jefferson comments on cash he received from Odell Beckham Jr
By Zach Ragan
Former LSU football wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr caused quite a stir after the Tigers’ win against Clemson in the National Championship game last month.
Moments after LSU football claimed the 2019 national championship, former Tigers wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr was seen on the field handing wads of cash to various players.
LSU initially said the money was “fake”. But quarterback Joe Burrow disputed that claim, telling Pardon My Take that the money was real.
Eventually, LSU said they were investigating the matter. And that was pretty much the last we heard of it.
On Tuesday, former Tigers wide receiver Justin Jefferson, one of the recipients of the cash, was asked about the incident by reporters at the NFL Draft combine.
Jefferson said he donated the cash to his church, adding “we knew we shouldn’t have done it”.
I always thought it was a dumb move by Beckham to hand out cash on the field after the game. It put his alma mater, and any student athletes who decided to return to LSU, in a bad position.
But at the same time, it would’ve been ridiculous for the NCAA to hand down any sort of punishment. Celebrating a national championship win, with an amount of money that probably was significant, shouldn’t be at the top of the NCAA’s priority list.
At least in the end something good came from the story. Jefferson donated the money to a place where it can be put to good use.
