LSU football named a “wild card program” for the 2020 season
By Zach Ragan
The expectations for LSU football in 2020 are all over the place.
LSU football is going to make some analysts look really smart and some look really dumb in 2020.
Except for 247Sports’ Barton Simmons, who may have the best LSU take of the offseason so far.
Simmons recently named his 10 wild-card teams for the 2020 season and he included the Tigers.
“LSU lost two coordinators, 14 players to the NFL draft, a Heisman Trophy winner and a bunch of off-field staffers and analysts. It would be forgivable for the Tigers to take a huge step back,” wrote Simmons.
He’s right. LSU lost a lot of firepower. And they lost Joe Brady, the man responsible for revolutionizing the Tigers’ offense.
For those reasons, no one is expecting LSU to replicate their insane success from 2019.
What are the reasonable expectations for LSU football in 2020
This is where I think Simmons really nails it.
Setting expectations for LSU in 2020 is probably unwise. Which is likely why Simmons went with a broad prediction.
“Anything from 8-4 to another undefeated season seem[s] possible”, wrote Simmons.
While I don’t think the Tigers are going 8-4 in 2020, I can understand why it’s not unreasonable to suggest that it could be possible.
LSU has plenty of talent on the roster. But a lot of that talent is unproven.
And then there’s quarterback Myles Brennan.
Brennan has all the arm talent in the world, but he’s never been the leader of a college football team.
How will he handle being a leader? Can he handle the pressure of big-time games? Those are questions that have to be answered before we can truly get a good feel for what to expect from the Tigers in 2020.
LSU has the talent to win it all once again. But they also have enough question marks that a letdown season is a possibility, too.
