LSU Football: Ed Orgeron’s top 5 wins as Tigers’ head coach
By Zach Ragan
LSU 54 Texas A&M 39 — November 24, 2016
When Ed Orgeron took over as LSU’s interim head coach in 2016, he was essentially auditioning for the head coaching gig.
And Orgeron knew from his time at USC’s interim head coach that everything had to go right for him to land the job.
After all, Coach O wasn’t the preferred choice in Baton Rouge. That honor went to Jimbo Fisher and Tom Herman.
Orgeron, however, was able to make enough of an impression during his eight games leading the Tigers to earn the job on a full-time basis.
And I think it ultimately had a lot to do with LSU’s win against Texas A&M to close the regular season.
First off, it was a road win against a conference opponent in prime time (Kyle Field isn’t an easy place to play at).
Secondly, it gave Orgeron his fifth win of the season. If the Tigers don’t beat the Aggies that night, it’s possible (depending on what would’ve happened in a bowl game), that Orgeron finished 4-4, instead of 6-2, as the interim head coach. And a 4-4 record (or even a 5-3 record), probably doesn’t get Coach O the job.
