LSU Football: Ed Orgeron leaves the door open to Myles Brennan not being the starter
By Zach Ragan
LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron left the door open to another quarterback starting this year.
LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron hasn’t been shy about praising redshirt junior quarterback Myles Brennan this offseason.
In fact, on Tuesday, Coach O again praised Brennan during a virtual media session with reporters.
“He’s leading. Everybody believes in Myles. He’s very vocal out there. He’s a totally different kid. He knows the offense, has a very strong arm,” said Orgeron (via 247Sports).
However, just because Coach O has praised Brennan a lot this offseason doesn’t mean the starting quarterback job is his no matter what. Brennan is going to have to continue to compete.
Could someone other than Myles Brennan start at quarterback for LSU football this fall?
Nearly everyone associated with LSU expects Brennan to be the Tigers’ starting quarterback this fall. And he almost certainly will be.
But Orgeron always wants his players to compete. It’s the whole “no position is safe mentality”. It’s smart because competition brings out the best in players.
So it shouldn’t be a total surprise that Coach O is leaving the door open to one of the backup quarterbacks beating out Brennan for the starting job.
“Right now, Myles is our starting quarterback. None of them have beat him out, but that doesn’t mean that can’t happen. We haven’t had no scrimmages or pre-season games, but things are looking good at quarterback,” said Orgeron on Tuesday.
Again, I’d be shocked if Brennan wasn’t the starter this fall.
But I think it’s obvious that Orgeron wants TJ Finley and Max Johnson to push Brennan as much as possible.
And if one of those two somehow ended up being the better option for the Tigers, then they’d be the starter. Orgeron is going to roll with the best player.
For now, he believes that’s Brennan. But like Coach O said, it could always change.
