Why the weekend could lead to future championships for LSU football
By Zach Ragan
LSU football’s weekend could lead to future national championships.
LSU football isn’t expected to compete for a national championship in 2020, thanks to the extreme loss of talent the program suffered after their 15-0 season in 2019.
But that doesn’t mean the Tigers are done winning championships with Ed Orgeron at the helm.
In fact, I think there could be numerous championships on the horizon for LSU.
And I think this weekend will be the catalyst for those championships.
A huge weekend of visits for LSU football
Recruiting visits technically can’t happen right now. At least not in a traditional sense.
Recruits aren’t allowed to have face-to-face contact with coaches. But recruits, on their own accord, can visit campuses.
And that’s what’s happening in Baton Rouge this weekend (similar to what we saw take place in Athens a couple of weeks ago).
Two of the Tigers’ top recruiting targets — five-star defensive linemen Korey Foreman and Maason Smith — are checking out LSU this weekend. They’re not alone, either.
Five-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh, another one of the Tigers’ top recruiting targets, is also visiting. Four-star linebacker Raesjon Davis, who is already committed to LSU, will be making the trip to Baton Rouge as well.
The star of the show here is obviously Foreman, the top-rated recruit in the nation who was recently compared to former Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young.
Foreman and Smith have made it abundantly clear that they’d prefer to play together at the next level. LSU makes the most sense (that’s where Smith, a Louisiana native, is most likely to end up), which makes this weekend’s visit absolutely huge (it’s Foreman’s first trip to Baton Rouge).
It helps that Davis is also on the trip. Davis is from Santa Ana, CA, which is about 30 minutes from Foreman’s hometown of Corona, CA.
I can’t imagine a better situation for LSU than getting Foreman on campus with his close friend (Smith) and a fellow California native who is already committed to the Tigers (Davis). Throw in Leigh, one of the top 2021 recruits in the nation, and it could be a weekend that sets LSU up to dominate for the foreseeable future.
Of course, simply getting Foreman to Baton Rouge won’t be enough to land a commitment from the nation’s No. 1 player. But it certainly will put the Tigers in a good position with Foreman.
A lot will likely change between now and the time that Foreman and Smith choose to commit. But I’m starting to feel really good about LSU’s chances to land the elite duo.
