LSU football quarterback Myles Brennan was unable to lead the Tigers to a win in his first career start.

LSU football quarterback Myles Brennan, a redshirt junior, had a successful debut if you look solely at the box score.

Brennan tossed for 345 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. He completed 27 of his 46 pass attempts.

Not bad for a kid making his first career start.

But “not bad” doesn’t get the job done in Baton Rouge — especially after the 2019 Tigers completely dominated everyone they played last season.

While “not bad” obviously isn’t where Brennan wants to be, he should actually be encouraged by his performance.

Most quarterbacks don’t start their careers on fire (not even Joe Burrow). Brennan has a lot of room to improve, but at the same time, he has a solid foundation in place.

LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron knows where Myles Brennan needs to improve

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron was pretty clear on Wednesday morning during the SEC weekly coaches’ teleconference when it came to Brennan and where the quarterback needs to improve.

“He (Brennan) had a really good day yesterday. He wants to get better, knows he needs to work on stepping up in the pocket and getting rid of the ball faster,” said Orgeron on Wednesday.

Brennan was sacked seven times in the Tigers’ loss to Mississippi State. Some of those sacks are on the offensive line, but several were because Brennan was a bit hesitant to get rid of the ball.

I think that’s something we’ll see Brennan get better at as the season progresses. In his first career start, it seemed like Brennan was more worried about not turning the ball over, which often leads to holding on to the ball.

Brennan just needs to be more confident in his abilities. He’s the starter at LSU for a reason — because Coach O and the staff believe he’s the guy that can lead the Tigers to another championship.

I feel pretty confident that Brennan will improve a lot from week one to week two (against Vanderbilt on Saturday).

And it sounds like Orgeron is confident, too, that Brennan will get a lot better.
