LSU football is searching for a new defensive coordinator.

LSU football took care of their offensive coordinator (and passing game coordinator) vacancy on Wednesday, but the Tigers are still looking for a defensive coordinator.

One potential option appears to be off the board for LSU.

Football Scoop reported on Wednesday night that former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason is “on the verge” of becoming Auburn’s new defensive coordinator.

Mason recently had conversations with LSU about their defensive coordinator vacancy, though it’s unclear how far those talks went.

LSU football’s defensive coordinator options are dwindling

LSU’s top target is Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, who is set to interview this week in Baton Rouge.

While we can’t rule out Freeman landing with the Tigers, I’m skeptical he’ll choose LSU over Notre Dame (for reasons I detailed here).

Another LSU target — Barry Odom — is reportedly staying at Arkansas on Sam Pittman’s staff.

That doesn’t leave a lot of veteran options that Ed Orgeron could hire.

Former South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp is still available, though he recently turned down the opportunity to join Steve Sarkisian’s staff at Texas.

Would he want to return to Baton Rouge?

(Muschamp coached at LSU from 2001-2004.)

Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White is also staying put.

Tennessee Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt could be on the way out at UT. Maybe Orgeron could convince Pruitt to come to Baton Rouge for a fresh start (Pruitt was successful at Florida State, Georgia, and Alabama as a defensive coordinator).

Georgia co-defensive coordinator Glen Schumann would also be a great option for the Tigers, but I’m not sure he’d want to leave Kirby Smart’s staff.

Next. LSU fans should be rooting against Joe Brady. dark

LSU seems to be hedging its bets on Freeman. If they miss on him, this search could get really interesting.
