New coordinators calling a game for the first time

LSU entered the UCLA game with new coordinators on both sides of the ball.

Orgeron hired Daronte Jones during the offseason to replace Bo Pelini as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.

Jake Peetz was hired to replace Steve Ensminger as LSU’s offensive coordinator. And DJ Mangas replaced Scott Linehan as the program’s passing game coordinator.

Peetz has never been an offensive coordinator before. And Jones hasn’t been a defensive coordinator since a stint at Bowie State over 10 years ago.

There’s going to be a learning curve for Jones, Peetz, and Mangas. I would expect the improvement for those guys from week one to week two to be significant. I’m sure they all learned a lot as first-time SEC coordinators in the loss.

Breaking in new coordinators always takes some time. Maybe if LSU opens the season against McNeese State and then plays LSU there’s a much different outcome to this game.
