LSU Tigers fans antsy for the next college football season received some welcomed news on Wednesday. We now know when the Bayou Bengals are on the practice field this Spring.

If the LSU Tigers are going to build on last season’s 10-win campaign, they must maximize their Spring practices. Such begins in 8 days when Brian Kelly’s team takes the field for their first collective workout. After that, the Bayou Bengals will practice five more times in March and nine times in April.

Additionally, LSU will host a Pro Day for NFL Draft prospects on March 29 and an April 13 – 15 Coaches Clinic.

One can expect business as usual as the Tigers are the only SEC team featuring the same head coach and offensive and defensive coordinators from 2022. Also, LSU will benefit significantly from roster continuity at significant positions.

Graduate transfer quarterback Jayden Daniels returns to Baton Rouge for a second season. Daniels’ mobility and calm while under pressure greatly attributed to LSU’s late-game heroics down the stretch of the 2022 season. Also returning to the Tigers’ offensive is 2022’s leading receiver Malik Nabers and overtime-win-against-Alabama hero Mason Taylor. Moreover, most of LSU’s 2022 starting offensive line will be on the Spring practice field.

The LSU Tigers defense has fewer returning starters than the offense. However, their best defender, Harold Perkins, is back for 2023. Perkins will move to inside linebacker and fill the void left by draft prospect BJ Ojulari. On the contrary, Perkins likely far exceeds his defensive predecessors’ performance.

The special teams portion of the Spring practice field is where the LSU Tigers will adapt to change. Kelly recently promoted John Jancek to an on-field coaching role, where he assumes special teams coordinator duties from Brian Polian. Jancek is a longtime defensive coach with experience on Kelly’s staff. Therefore, one might think LSU used the special teams coordinator vacancy to get another defensive assistant onto the field.

Multiple LSU Tigers coaches will likely contribute to the special teams in 2023. However, Jancek is ultimately accountable while carrying the ‘special teams coordinator’ title.
