LSU Tigers by the numbers: Women’s NCAA Tournament history

The LSU Tigers women’s basketball team is dancing in March for the second straight year. Such triggers our look back at the Bayou Bengals history competing in the women’s NCAA Tournament.

Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers are chasing their first national championship in the program’s history. Speaking of history, the Tigers have danced in the women’s NCAA tournament 26 times since its inception in the 1981-82 season. LSU has a 44-26 tournament record including appearances in every round but the championship. To commemorate such, we’re reviewing the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team during March Madness by the numbers.

Round of 64

22 The LSU Tigers have only played 22 first-round games out of 26 women’s NCAA tournament appearances. Such is due to the old tournament format that awarded top-seeded teams with a first-round bye.

16  The Bayou Bengals have won 17 of their 22 first-round matchups, including 16 straight wins from 1997 to 2014.

14 – LSU’s most recent first-round matchup came in 2022 in a battle against No. 14 Jackson State in which they won, 83-77.

Round of 32

23 – The LSU women’s basketball team has made it to the second round 23 times in program history. In round two, LSU has won 14 of their 23 matchups, including six straight wins from 2003-2008.

6 – The Tigers’ most recent game in the round of 32 was a loss to No. 6 Ohio State in 2022.

Sweet 16

14 – The LSU Tigers reached the women’s NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 14 of their 26 appearances. Moreover, LSU reached the Sweet 16 every season from 2003-08.

7 – LSU was a No. 7 seed in their most recent Sweet 16 appearance in 2014.

6 – The Bayou Bengals won six straight Sweet 16 matchups from 2003-08.

3 – In 2014, LSU lost to No. 3 Louisville in the Sweet 16. Louisville advanced and lost to Maryland in the Elite Eight. The Tigers have not returned to the Sweet 16 since losing to the Cardinals.

Elite Eight

8 – The Bayou Bengals own eight appearances in the Elite Eight, including seven in the 2000s.

7 – LSU reached the Elite Eight seven times in nine years from 2000-08.

5 – The LSU Tigers made their first Elite Eight appearance five years after the tournament started, in 1986. Also, LSU won their last five Elite Eight contests, each occurring in 2004-08.

1 – LSU has knocked off a pair of No. 1 seeds in the Elite Eight, UConn (2007) and South Carolina (2008).

Final Four

18 – From 2005-07, LSU lost an average of 18 points in their Final Four games.

5 – The LSU Tigers have followed up their five Elite Eight wins with five Final Four appearances. Unfortunately, the Bayou Bengals failed to advance to the National Championship Game on each attempt.

1 – In 2004, the Tigers lost to No. 1 Tennessee and legendary coach Pat Summit 52-50 in the Final Four. The Volunteers advanced and lost to UConn in the National Championship Game.

The LSU Tigers last Final Four appearance occurred in 2008 when they lost a closely contested Final Four game against No. 1 Tennessee. The Lady Vols moved on to defeat No. 2 Stanford in the National Championship Game 64-48.
