In the Tigers’ first-round game against Hawaii, Angel Reese posted her 29th double-double of the season, scoring 32 points and hauling 15 boards in 36 minutes of action. The 34 points tied the LSU record for most points in a tournament game, a record set by Marie Ferdinand against Purdue in 2001.
Freshman Flau’jae Johnson also posted double-digit points against Hawaii. In her first March Madness game, the freshman had 10 points and six rebounds and led the team with five assists. Reese and Johnson combined for 44 of the Tigers’ 73 points on the night, shooting 16-28 from the field (57%).
If the Tigers can defeat Michigan on Sunday, they will advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2014. The LSU Tigers would battle against the winner of No. 2 Utah and No. 10 Princeton in Greenville, S.C., on Friday, March 24th.
LSU Tigers head coach Kim Mulkey reached the Sweet 16 every year while coaching Baylor from 2009-21. The exception is 2020 when COVID-19 resulted in the cancellation of the women’s NCAA Tournament. Now Mulkey has LSU poised to get to the Sweet 16 in the second season of her Baton Rouge tenure.
