LSU football: Fall practice information fans need to know
By John Fye
LSU football is finally returning to work with the new season four weeks afoot. Here is a rundown of what to expect with Fall practices getting underway.
LSU football opens its Fall camp tomorrow in Baton Rouge. Such is the first Tigers practice since the conclusion of Spring camp in April.
NCAA rules allow programs to practice 20 hours a week during a 34-day cycle. Players must receive a three-hour break between practice sessions and at least one day off per week. Additionally, teams cannot engage in full contact until their third practice and are limited to three full-team scrimmages, including the spring game.
We expect the Tigers to practice 19 times from August 3rd to the 26th. As of now, LSU football has not published their Fall practice schedule. However, insider Matthew Brune indicated LSU’s start date during his Fall camp preview podcast.
Last year’s LSU football Fall camp schedule included 19 practices that wrapped up the Saturday before their first game against Florida State. Moreover, 16 practices included media availability sessions featuring interview opportunities with coaches and players.
LSU football fans can expect the Tigers to follow the same schedule in 2023. Head coach Brian Kelly does not need to change how his program does business this season.
The Tigers finished the 2022 campaign with a 10-4 record, including an overtime win over Alabama and a 63-7 thrashing of Purdue in the Citrus Bowl. As such, LSU did many things right during their previous offseason.
We expect more from this year’s team.
LSU is the only SEC program that returns the same head coach, offensive and defensive coordinators, and starting quarterback from the previous Fall camp. The familiar personnel is a significant advantage because the Tigers pick up where they left off last season.
Conversely, programs like Alabama and Georgia are working through new quarterbacks, coaches, and schemes this Fall. LSU football fans know such involves a sluggish start with some stumbling.
We anticipate a must faster start in Death Valley this August. The Tigers will be more ready to play Florida State in Week 1 of 2023.
