LSU Football: 3 most overrated teams on 2023 schedule
By John Fye
No. 1 – Alabama Crimson Tide
I am sure few fans are shocked that I view Alabama as the most overrated opponent on the LSU Football schedule.
I expect the Crimson Tide to compete for an SEC championship and College Football Playoff berth in 2023. However, I cannot get over the voters who have consistently ranked Alabama over LSU Football in preseason polls.
Is there an assumption that the Tigers’ overtime win in 2022 was an anomaly?
LSU is the only team in the SEC with the same head coach, offensive and defensive coordinators, and starting quarterback from a year ago. Conversely, the Crimson Tide are staring down a three-headed fall quarterback competition while adjusting to new play-callers on offense and defense.
Suffice it to say that continuity provides LSU Football a significant advantage.
I will entertain arguments that put Alabama ahead of LSU because of Nick Saban, but not by much. Indeed, the large gap between the Tide at No. 4 and the Tigers at No. 5 in the Week 1 AP Poll is unacceptable.
We know Saban intends to run the ball more in 2023, but it’s not like opposing defenses will let him. The Tide lost two games and missed the playoff with the reigning Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback last season. Does the transition to Jalen Milroe or Ty Simpson make Alabama a top four team?
Laugh out loud; it doesn’t.
Regardless, the most challenging game on the LSU Football schedule is against Saban’s squad in Tuscaloosa. We’ll find out how over or underrated Alabama is then.
