Not a great opening NFL Sunday for LSU Football alums

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (9) recovers on the ground after being sacked by Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett (95) in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 1 game between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals at FirstEnergy Stadium in downtown Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023.

LSU Football fans were undoubtedly glued to the TV for the first week of NFL action. Unfortunately, the day was unkind to our favorite former Tigers.

Joe Burrow returned to the field ahead of schedule following a calf strain he suffered during a preseason game. The most popular LSU Football alum is fresh off signing a contract extension, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history. Unfortunately, Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals came out flat on Sunday.

The Browns crush the Bengals as Burrow comes up flat

The Cleveland Browns smothered Burrow on Sunday during their 24-3 win. The LSU Football legend was 14-for-31 on pass attempts and mustered only 82 yards passing. Suffice it to say that Burrow’s fellow 2019 Tigers teammate, Ja’Marr Chase, also underwhelmed on Sunday. The explosive receiver caught five passes for a measly 39 yards and no touchdowns.

Burrow’s afternoon was so bad that backup quarterback Jake Browning replaced him in the 4th quarter. The former LSU signal-caller did not look like himself on Sunday. I’m sure debates that Burrow was rushed back to the field too soon are raging on Cincinnati sports radio and podcasts this week.

Justin Jefferson has a huge first half, but the Vikings flop vs. Bucs

Justin Jefferson got off to an outstanding start in the Minnesota Vikings’ Week 1 game vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former LSU Football superstar caught seven passes for 138 yards in the first half. However, Jefferson finished the game with nine catches for 150 yards.

As his numbers suggest, the Vikings fell flat in the second and dropped their first game to the Bucs 20-17. The loss can’t feel good for Minnesota fans, who were likely a tad peeved that the team failed to secure an extension with Jefferson this offseason.

Losing to a Tampa Bay team that appears content to tank is rubbing salt in the wounds.

Yesterday, we talked about the large body of former LSU Football players on active NFL rosters and practice squads. Indeed, the 61 Tigers alums in pro football please LSU fans for two reasons. We know the number matters to the top high school players with NFL dreams. Also, seeing our favorite former Tigers on the pro gridiron makes Sundays more enjoyable.
