This weekend, LSU was on a bye week so it couldn't go out and improve its chances of making the College Football Playoff with a win. When LSU is on a bye, you're often rooting for upsets as it'll help LSU in moving up in the rankings. This weekend delivered that with a key result in the SEC and a few other massive upsets which helps LSU with its case for the Playoff.
The biggest piece of the weekend that helped not only LSU but, also every other team in the country was South Carolina upsetting Texas A&M. The Aggies entered the weekend in first place in the SEC but, the Aggies took their first loss in SEC play and their second loss overall which gives them no wiggle room while they still have to play Texas.
The ACC had a shocking result as the same time in the same state as Clemson fell victim to Louisville. The Tigers made the final score look closer than it was as they were dominated for the majority of this game. The second loss puts Clemson on the brink of elimination and given how SMU fared this weekend, Clemson may miss the ACC Championship Game finishing the year with no true big win on their resume.
Ohio State handed Penn State its first loss of the season which won't truly help LSU unless Penn State suffers a second loss but, it could be impactful.
Texas Tech handed Iowa State its first loss of the season and now with only BYU remaining undefeated, the Big 12 will likely remain a one bid league rather than potentially taking up an at large bid.
The Tigers resume overall didn't change much as we don't fully know what the committee is going to value. The loss to USC looks even worse as the Trojans lost to Washington on Saturday while LSU's win over South Carolina looks better as LSU's loss to Texas A&M looks a bit worse.
We'll have to wait until this Tuesday this week to see where the College Football Playoff committee ranks LSU before its massive game against Alabama. As long as LSU is within striking distance as is Alabama, LSU should get a big jump with a win over the Crimson Tide.
