When Brian Kelly left Notre Dame to come coach at LSU, the whole point was for him to use an SEC football blue-blood to his advantage to finally win a national championship. Although LSU has been of quality since he took over in Baton Rouge four seasons ago, the same frustrating things keep on happening to him and his team. They struggle mightily vs. the best teams that are on their scheudle.
In Saturday's rendition of the Magnolia Bowl with SEC rival Ole Miss, Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin continuously ran circles around Kelly and his team. It may have only been a five-point loss for the Tigers, but the 24-19 final score does not really do it justice. Ole Miss was largely in control for most of the game. The 17-7 lead Ole Miss had going into halftime primarily propelled them to victory here.
Naturally, it is only fitting that the fine folks over on X let Kelly have it for yet another job not well done.
College football fans on social media ripped Brian Kelly after Ole Miss loss
Some of the comments shared out on social media are quite damning, but none of which are wrong.
Lane Kiffin coached circles around Brian Kelly today.

Can’t be one dimensional and beat anyone of significance. Shame on Brian Kelly and the entire offensive staff for their inability to run the ball against anyone.

LSU’s defense is crap without a great DC. LSU’s offense is crap without a a great OC. LSU’s recruiting is crap without a great GM. What exactly are they paying Brian Kelly 100 million for?

Brian Kelly WRYD?

The biggest thing the general public is struggling to get its collective head around with Kelly is what is the point of him making all that money when he is not an impactful head coach? His struggles against ranked opponents are once again getting the best of him in year four at Baton Rouge. After what went down in Oxford on Saturday afternoon, Kelly is probably going to retire without winning a national title.
There might be limitations for Kiffin at Ole Miss, but he has his Rebels operating at nearly their apex.
Brian Kelly looked like a head coach who is not going to reach the playoff
There is a lot of football left to be played, but there are only so many bids available in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Although the SEC only got three teams in last season, the chances of this league getting in four or more teams feels far more likely. All offseason long, LSU was in a cluster of a handful of teams in the SEC who could realistically do it. Now with this loss, they will need some work.
Overall, LSU is the one of only a few schools in the SEC where if you have anything close to the right head coach you can win national championships. They have four claimed national championships, all with different head coaches. In modern history, Nick Saban, Les Miles and Ed Orgeron all won one apiece. One would think that a coach of Kelly's caliber would be able to make this dream a reality here.
Ultimately, Saturday was a bit of an indictment of Kelly. Kiffin is the younger head coach at the far less fruitful program in Ole Miss and is just winning more games with his talent than Kelly is. Blake Baker's defense has been good this year. Although Garrett Nussmeier has serious NFL potential, he does not often live up to the hype within the context of Joe Sloan's offense. Again, what is the point of Kelly?
LSU has the talent to win a national championship, but Kelly seems to be letting them down at coach.
