As LSU has struggled at times this season it has been in part due to a lack of top end talent at a few key positions. This can be blamed on in part LSU's lack of activity in the transfer portal this offseason. The Tigers had to replace two first round picks at wide receiver, three starting defensive tackles, and a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback.
Despite this, LSU didn't bring in a ton adding a few contributors but no top end talent to elevate this team's floor. In the moment, every LSU fan wished the team was more active but, Kelly stuck with the team he already had. Last week, Kelly mentioned he didn't want to use the transfer portal too much, on Monday however he changed his tune.
"We will be very aggressive. We weren't in the transfer portal last year. Put together a Defensive Line with minimal resources. We stayed, to use a term loosely, well under the cap. We're also bringing in 16 mid-years (Freshmen) and maybe the largest transfer portal class as well."Brian Kelly
The phrase that stands out the most is when Kelly mentions that they stayed well under the cap using minimal resources. This offseason, Kelly mentioned that LSU wasn't in the market of buying players which was likely do to a lack of NIL resources. After losing Bryce Underwood, some NIL resources have opened up.
Brian Kelly says that they may bring in their largest transfer portal class in addition to what LSU will bring in with its freshman class.
This should be exciting news for the LSU Football team in 2025 as the Tigers appear to be willing to play the game shopping for elite level talent. The Tigers will lose a ton on the offensive line, at tight end, at edge rusher, and in the secondary. If LSU is able to reload using the portal at those positions while also developing the players already on the roster, the Tigers will be in Playoff contention next season.
